Overview of HDR PQ Mode

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to technology that enables expression of an exceptionally wide range of brightness.

In contrast to HDR, the conventional range of brightness is known as SDR, or Standard Dynamic Range.

The PQ in this function name, HDR PQ, stands for Perceptual Quantization and refers to the gamma curve of the input signal for displaying HDR images. Brightness up to 10,000 cd/m2 is supported, with characteristics closely corresponding to human vision.

Display in HDR PQ mode

HDR monitors provide HDR PQ (10-bit) display for RAW images from compatible cameras. Note that actual display depends on monitor performance.

Systems enabling PQ-compliant display

Windows OS
(operating system)
Windows 10 Version 1803 or later
GPU
(video card)
Video cards:
Nvidia GeForce GTX 10 series, AMD Polaris architecture, and similar cards (4 GB or more video memory recommended)
Monitor Products that meet HDR10 standards*
Cable HDMI 2.0a/b
macOS OS
(operating system)
macOS 12, 13, 14
Mac models that support HDR: as listed on the official webpage
Monitor Liquid Retina XDR display (including MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display), Apple Pro Display XDR
Monitors other than XDR displays that meet HDR standards*

Images may not be displayed correctly depending on performance of the display device and GPU (video card). Actual display also depends on monitor performance.

Note

  • HDR images generated as described in Creating HDR Images differ from the images intended for HDR PQ mode.
