Working with Files Saved in HEVC Format

You can work with files saved in HEVC format as follows if your camera has HDR PQ settings, or if you are using an EOS R, EOS Ra, or EOS 5D Mark IV. You can also save files in HEIF format.

For cameras with HDR PQ settings

  1. Select an image.

  2. In the [Help] menu, select [Activate HEVC codec].

  3. Follow the activation instructions.

  4. After activation, restart DPP.

For the EOS R, EOS Ra, or EOS 5D Mark IV

  1. Download Canon HEVC Codec from the Canon website.

  2. Install Canon HEVC Codec on your computer.

  3. Start DPP.

Saving Images Displayed in HDR PQ Mode in HEIF Format

  • For instructions on saving images, see Converting and Saving in Saving Editing Results. When selecting the type of image in step 3, select [HEIF (*.HIF)] from [Save as type] before saving the image.
  • Image quality and compression rate cannot be selected when saving in HEIF format.
  • You can use [Save] (Windows), [Save] (macOS), [Save As], [Convert and save], and [Batch process] for HEIF images.
  • You can save HEIF images as JPEGs or TIFFs. (The images are saved as SDR images.)

Processing in this case provides display that closely resembles HDR PQ display on HDR monitors, although color and gradation will seem somewhat different from display in HDR PQ mode.

Caution

  • The working color space of images saved as JPEGs or TIFFs is set to sRGB, which cannot be changed.
  • HEIF files generated with software other than DPP are not compatible with HEIF files saved by DPP. Only the following files can be opened in DPP.

    • HEIF files from cameras
    • HEIF files saved in DPP
  • Images saved in HEIF format cannot be printed using Print Studio Pro software for Canon inkjet printers.
