Connecting a camera and smartphone

Connect the camera and smartphone with one of the following methods.

For a wireless connection

  • Connecting the camera and smartphone to the same access point (access point connection).
  • Connecting with a smartphone that has a tethering connection set (tethered connection)

For a wired connection

  • Using a USB cable
  • Using the separately sold Multi-Function Shoe Adapter for Smartphone Link AD-P1 (Android only)

Application settings

When connecting a camera and an Android smartphone, operate this application to configure the connection settings before connecting.

  1. Tap [Settings] at the top right of the main screen ().

  2. Tap [Connection mode] from the [Settings] screen.

  3. Select [Connection mode].

  4. Tap [Return] at the top left of the [Settings] screen to return to the main screen.

Smartphone settings (tethered connections only)

Use the following settings when using a tethered connection.

Android

Tethered connection settings for Android devices may vary by manufacturer and model. Please refer to your smartphone's instruction manual.

iOS

  1. Open [Settings] in the app, then tap [General] → [About] → [Name].

  2. Set the network name on the [Name] screen.

    • The network name will be displayed when connecting to the network.
  3. Tap [Settings] → [Personal Hotspot].

  4. Set [Allow Others to Join] to ON.

    • Tap [OK].
  5. Select [Wi-Fi Password] and set a password.

    • The specified password will be input when using a tethered connection.

Caution

  • Make sure that [Allow Others to Join] is set to OFF when not using this application.

Connection operation

Perform the connection operation in the communication settings menu of the camera. For details, refer to the descriptions about communication functions in the instruction manual of the camera.

Connection procedure

  1. Select smartphone for the device to connect.

    • On EOS R1 or EOS R5 Mark II, select [Content Transfer Professional] on the [Connect to smartphone(tablet)] screen.
    • On EOS R3, EOS-1D X Mark III, or EOS-1D X Mark II, select [Smartphone] on the [Select communication function] screen.
    • On EOS R5, EOS R5 C, or EOS R6, select [SmartphoneConnect to smartphone] from [Wireless features:Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connection].
    • On EOS R6 Mark II, select [Connect to smartphone(tablet)] on the [Advanced connection] screen.
    • On XF series cameras or the EOS C400, set [Network] to [Enable], and in [New Conn. Setting (Wizard)], select [Canon App].
  2. Select the network to connect to on the [Select a network] screen.

  3. Enter the password on the [Password] screen.

  4. Follow the directions displayed on the screen to complete the connection settings.

    • When using a tethered connection, verify the IP address displayed on the [Waiting to connect] screen.
  5. Launch CTP.

    Tethered connections

    • Tap [Connect].
    • On the IP address input screen, enter the IP address that was displayed on the [Waiting to connect] screen.

    Access point connections

    • Tap the camera to connect to from the displayed camera list.
  6. Follow the directions in the message to operate the camera.

Wired connections

For the cameras compatible with a wired connection, refer to Compatible cameras.

Camera settings

Using a USB cable

  1. Configure the following settings.

    • On the EOS R series, select [Photo Import/Remote Control] (Android) or [Canon app(s) for iPhone] (iOS) from [Choose USB connection app] in the communication menu or settings menu.
    • On cameras in the XF series or the EOS C400, select [PTP Connection/GP-E2] (Android) or [Canon app(s) for iPhone] (iOS) from the system settings menu.
  2. Connect the camera and smartphone with a USB cable.

    • Android or iOS (USB-TypeC): We recommend that you use genuine Canon products (Interface Cable IFC-100U or IFC-400U).
    • iOS (Lightning connector): Use Anker 514 Lightning to USB-C Accessory Cable (0.9m, for Camera).

Caution

  • Interface Cable IFC-400U cannot be used for XF605.

Using AD-P1 (EOS R series and Android only)

Configure the following settings, and then attach the separately sold Multi-Function Shoe Adapter for Smartphone Link AD-P1 and smartphone to the camera. For how to use the AD-P1, refer to the instruction manual included with the AD-P1.

  • Select [Photo Import/Remote Control] from [Choose USB connection app] in the communication menu or settings menu.
