2-3 Canon Log Shooting Support Functions
This section covers support functions for checking the exposure and color on the EVF, LCD monitor, and HDMI output when shooting in Canon Log 2/Canon Log 3.
When shooing in Canon Log 2/Canon Log 3, the contrast and saturation are low, making it difficult to check the subject and exposure.
The EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II are equipped with the following support functions for checking the exposure and color on the EVF, monitor, or HDMI output when shooting.
View assist function
When using Canon Log or HDR settings, you can check high-contrast screens which are perfect for monitoring on the LCD monitor or EVF.
When using [On (BT.709)], Canon Log 2/Canon Log 3 displays images equivalent to CMT 709. Customizing quick settings in Live View mode allows you to quickly turn view assist on/off.
BT.709 ([On (BT.709)])
Displays images using simplified conversion for standard gamma/color space.
HDR assist ([On (HDR)])
Displays images of medium luminance subjects converted to appear closer to an HDR display.
We recommend using [On (BT.709)] for SDR when shooting movie using Canon Log 2 or Canon Log 3 and for checking the look of movie on an SDR display, HDR assist ([On (HDR)]) for HDR shot in Canon Log 2 or Canon Log 3, and for checking the look on an HDR display.

Zebra function
This displays a striped pattern on set luminance areas and surrounding areas for checking the exposure.
This function can be used whether view assist is on or off.
It can be used for checking highlight blowouts and if the skin exposure is correct by setting Zebra 1 to about 70%. (Note that 70% is a rough figure, and may need to be adjusted depending on the lighting, environment, and exposure.)

Histogram
This displays the signal volume for each tone on the screen.
False color function
This function displays an image with six colors assigned to the luminance level.
It can also be used when view assist is off.
Waveform monitor function (EOS R5 Mark II only)
This displays the exposure level (luminance and RGB parade are available) of the screen as a waveform monitor. It allows you to check the screen exposure status in the horizontal direction.
It can be used whether view assist is on or off.
Reference
- When using the waveform monitor, the signal level that is highlight blown out may be lower or higher than 100, depending on the gamma setting, not 100 for the waveform monitor.
Also, when Zebra is set, if the value is set close to 100% or close to 0%, the zebra may not be displayed depending on the gamma setting. In either case, we recommend changing the exposure and testing the zebra display and waveform monitor display movement in advance. - Both Canon Log 2/Canon Log 3 use 18% gray as the exposure standard.
