2-4 Canon 709/Picture Style/BT.709 Standard Overview and Differences
This section covers imaging styles for Canon 709, Picture Style, and BT.709 Standard, as well as dynamic range characteristics.
Imaging styles
Both Canon 709 and Picture Style use somewhat high contrast settings without the need for color grading, making them very user friendly imaging styles. They are designed for focusing on human skin tones and faithfully reproducing skin colors.
To shoot with the same image style and settings as still images, use Picture Style, and to achieve a film-like style, we recommend Canon 709.
Canon 709
Designed for a film-like look, this setting is capable of CINEMA EOS style recording straight from the camera.
Picture Style
Delivers the same color reproduction as still image settings. In addition to [Standard], [Landscape] delivers vivid colors, where as [Portrait] creates colors specifically for portraiture, so selecting a preset allows you to easily change and adjust the look of your movies.
BT.709 Standard
Conforms to the BT.709 standard, and is designed for broadcast image styles with toned-down contrast and saturation. This is particularly effective for broadcast use cases which requires faithful color reproduction of subjects and conformance to the BT.709 standard. If your work flow requires a gamma color space setting that conforms to BT.709, use BT.709 Standard.
Dynamic range differences
Canon 709 has the widest dynamic range of all three settings, and can maintain highlights with minimal blowout. We recommend this setting for shooting scenes with a wide dynamic range.
Note that the dynamic range changes when using Picture Style and high luminance end/tone priority (D+).
Additionally, BT.709 Standard is equipped with "super white," a tone signal for movie that is close to white. Whether or not super white is displayed depends on the monitor, software settings, and supported standards, which will change the way tones close to white and highlight blowouts appear, so caution is necessary when editing and viewing with BT.709 Standard.
