Focusing

Focus manually. Focus with the focusing ring as you check the viewfinder or screen.

  • Display is as follows in the viewfinder or on the screen after you turn the camera on. If the viewfinder or screen is blank, press the INFO button repeatedly.

    • (1) Image through the left lens*
    • (2) Image through the right lens*
    • (3) Reflection from the lens on the other side
    • (4) Magic window, or estimated initial display area as viewed in 2D in an environment such as a web browser
    • (5) Area shown in a magnified view*
    • Not shown in movie modes on EOS R5 C.

EOS R5, EOS R5C (in still photo modes)

  • For a magnified view (5), press the Magnify or reduce button on the camera. Display can be further magnified by pressing the Magnify or reduce button again. To return to viewing the entire image, press the Magnify or reduce button again.
  • To move the magnified area (which includes the left/right shooting area), or to move the display position during magnification, tap the camera screen or use Multi-controller.
  • To switch between left/right lens display, press the INFO button during magnified view.
  • You can make focusing easier by setting [Peaking] in [MF peaking settings] to [On] in the camera menu, which will display edges of the subject in focus in a color of your choice.
  • Focusing is also easier if you set [Focus guide] to [On] in the camera menu to display a guide frame that shows where and how much to adjust focus.

EOS R5 C (in movie modes)

  • For a magnified view of RAW or MP4 movies (with the latter being 4096×2160 or lower resolution and a frame rate of 60p or lower), press the Magnify or reduce button on the camera. To return to viewing the entire image, press the Magnify or reduce button again. Magnification can be adjusted with the SET button.
  • To move the display position during magnification, tap the camera screen or use the joystick.
  • You can make focusing easier by activating peaking in the camera menu, which accentuates subject edge display based on how much the subject is in focus.
  • Focusing is also easier if you set [Focus guide] to [On] in the camera menu to display a guide frame that shows where and how much to adjust focus.

Caution

  • Before video output via HDMI to an external recording device, set [Peaking] in [MF peaking settings] to [Off]. If the setting is [On], images will be recorded with the peaking color applied.
  • MF peaking may be hard to discern at high ISO speeds, especially when ISO expansion is set. To check peaking, consider reducing the ISO speed temporarily.
  • Shooting distance information cannot be displayed.
  • For evaluative metering in still photo shooting, metering is centered on the area indicated by (5).
  • EOS R5 precautions

  • Attaching an RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE lens disables camera image stabilization.
  • Focus guide display cannot be switched between left/right images during movie recording.
  • EOS R5 C precautions (in movie modes)

  • Before video output via HDMI to an external recording device, set [Peaking] to [Off]. With peaking activated, images are recorded with the peaking color applied.
  • [Spotlight] is not available in [Light Metering].
  • Focus guide display cannot be moved.
  • Magnified view is not available with these settings.
    • Recording format: MP4, resolution: 8K (8192×4320, 7680×4320)
    • Recording format: MP4, resolution: 4K (4096×2160, 3840×2160), frame rate: 72p–120p
  • Magnification is not possible by selecting the left or right image.

Note

  • The focus guide can be displayed in the center of the left or right image.
  • When you move the area indicated by (5) between the left and right images in still photo modes on the EOS R5 or EOS R5 C, display of the focus guide's guide frame can also move accordingly.
