4-3 Action Priority Basic Operations

Main subject selection and tracking operation when [Action priority] is set to [Enable]

  • If a subject performing an action is recognized during standby, while using servo AF (including during continuous shooting with servo AF) the camera selects them as the main subject.
    • ・Even while tracking another subject, the AF frame switches to the subject performing the action.
    • ・Even if a registered person is detected while using register people priority, the AF frame switches to the subject performing the action.
  • During servo AF, after switches to the subject performing the action, the camera continues tracking them even after the action is completed.
    • ・However, if another subject performs the action after the action is completed, the AF frame switches to that subject.
  • When tracking a subject specified via touch operations, the AF frame will not switch to another subject using action priority.

* Note that when multiple subjects are performing an action simultaneously, the AF frame may switch around frequently.

The camera recognizes the subject doing the action and switches the AF frame to them

AF frame switching range in action priority

During standby, regardless of the AF area setting, the tracking frame moves to the subject performing the action on the entire screen.

When Servo AF is started, if [Whole area tracking Servo AF] is set to [Enable], the AF frame will move to the subject performing the action in the entire screen regardless of the AF area setting (the movement will occur from the moment Servo AF is started). On the other hand, if [Whole area tracking Servo AF] is [Disable], the AF frame moves to the subject performing the action only within the preset AF area.

By combining the AF area other than [Whole area AF] with [Whole area tracking Servo AF] [Disable], you can adjust the range within which the AF frame can be moved by action priority.

Usage Tips and Precautions

Shooting with the following method makes it easier to select the subject in action as the main subject.

  • Shoot a large image of the subject in the action (approximately half or more of the image on the screen).
  • Shoot the subject in action with the ball.
  • Make sure that the entire body of the subject performing the action is captured.
  • Shoot in a well-lit environment.

The following kinds of subject may not be recognized as priority subjects based on their movement.

  • Small subjects
  • Too bright or dark
  • Partially hidden or outside the angle of view
  • Difficult to distinguish from the background
  • Obscured by rain, snow, or dust clouds.
  • Wearing uniforms that make it difficult to determine their posture
  • Crowded together, in front of/behind each other
  • In scenes where the ball is not visible or only partly visible.
  • Greatly out of focus
  • Under flicker light source
